As much as I dig a lot of things about Dick Tracy, I almost always get stuck admiring the cinematography (Storaro) and the production design. I frequently overlook some of the performances (e.g. Dustin Hoffman).

Scarface is okay but is more lauded but is nearly as caricatured as Pacino is nowadays. I dig Scent of a Woman, but I had a hard time including it because it really started Pacino on the whole “Hoowah!” train. Each role since then became a variation on Frank Slade. That said, it was probably the most difficult to omit because it finally snagged him an Oscar. Re Brasco and The Insider, he’s certainly solid in both, but I think that Caprice took chops and it’s difficult to round out a villain. Most villains are there to be defeated. I thought Pacino made him fun to watch.

That’s a major upset for a Pacino Top 5. The obvious counter suggestion to that role is Scarface. The other obvious counter suggestion would be Scent of a Woman. He was good as Big Boy Caprice, no doubt. But I can’t imagine very many people picking that one over Tony Montana.

Just out of curiosity…how do you feel about Pacino’s performances in Donnie Brasco and The Insider?

Also, which role was toughest for you to omit?
