You make a fine point about both Hawking and Terminator — another film that is good (like Looper) but bunks itself up with time travel. My point (for both of those films) is that the reading of time travel that they establish (whether it agree with Hawking or not) doesn’t work because they defy the rules they’ve established. It makes for some really cool visuals with the slowly amputated limbs and such, but it murks up the story. A film like Back to the Future uses this type of narrative and sticks to it; as does Twelve Monkeys. Thanks for reading!

Simple fact is, his opinions are all hypothetical until time travel is actually invented. You can pick apart any time travel movie with simpler tactics. People seem to lose the fact that in the ‘original’ Terminator timeline, Connor’s father is unknown i.e not Kyle Reese; Judgement Day happens and reese is sent back, and takes a serious risk bedding Sarah. They could have had a daughter instead of a son. Then we get the Reese loop where he has to go back.
Back to Looper. I’m sure future Joe wouldn’t have left all that gold in the field. His chat with his younger self in the diner shows him insisting his younger self will meet this woman. He wouldn’t leave the gold; he knows he needs it.
