I think you’re giving the director too much credit. Pretty sure the romantic relationship was supposed to have started after they exchanged a few shy glances while Gwen was in her nightgown. That’s obviously a basis for a strong romantic attachment.

I only vaguely remember the overuse of lunatic. I was in the throes of a giggling fit, so the first 15 minutes were a wash for me. However, I’m really not surprised. Lunatic…luna…cyclical insanity…it was all like a subtlety sledgehammer (re: Gwen’s white horse).

You make some fine points, and honestly, the post was about 1500 words before I trimmed it; seemed a bit excessive to burn a movie down, then urinate on the ashes.

I see how shooting Lawrence through the heart may not be equivalent to creating a “love story,” but I am still perplexed as to why the opening scene includes what appears to be a tombstone with an epitaph about true love, and the “blaaagh” prefaces a voice-over about “true love.”

When did they fall in love? And why were they in love? Or, were the directors trying to go for a “human-love” sort of angle — i.e. we are all part of the human fabric, we are the world, etc., etc?

Re: Ripper case. Yeah. Caught that. Seemed a bit too out of place to even discuss, though the case was never closed, which means he did a pretty shoddy job before jumping to his current assignment.

I also forgot to mention the repetition of “lunatic” within the first fifteen minutes or so. Not sure why it bothers me, but just seems silly.

For instance, you have to love how the writers tried to explain Lawrence’s darker coloring by casting a faintly Hispanic-looking woman as Solana Talbot. How about John Talbot’s faithful manservant, Singh, who was found dead with a key inexplicably tied around his neck? Also, John did not lock Lawrence in a cell…John locked himself in a cell and intentionally allowed Lawrence to go on a bloodthirsty rampage in order to remove any suspicion from himself relating to his son’s murder, etc. However, HOW he managed to lock himself in the cell…well…I just don’t know. If he could do that, why did Singh have a key? Personally, I enjoyed the predictable and NON-creepy glowing of Anthony Hopkins’s eyes in the dark. Really?

Don’t forget about the poorly done flashback, showing how John was first bitten by some little boy living in a cave on a mountain in India, thereby giving the curse more “exotic” origins. Puh-lease. Also, where the hell do the gypsies come in? What makes the old gypsy woman an authority on werewolves? Why does Gwen CONVENIENTLY have a book entitled “Ancient Gypsy Lore”? And how is she the only one who can save him?? Are they hinting that she saved his soul because he turned back into a human before his final death sigh…er…groan…er…gargle…? I do not think that crying “Lawrence, it’s me!” and then shooting him with a silver bullet equals saving his soul through love. Just saying…

Also, random dead police officer, supposedly killed by John while in human form…really? Why? Plus, the final fight seen was ridiculously anticlimactic. I didn’t know that werewolves were so flammable.

Finally, I expect to see the following in 2011:
Hugo Weaving in….THE WOLFMAN 2: RETURN OF THE BEAST

By the way, did you catch the comment about how the detective was “just off the Ripper case”?
